Insight into the preclinical [before symptoms] phase of RA (which can often last several years) is exciting, as it might provide insight into the early pathogenetic events that could be obscured in the clinical phase of the disease by the intense inflammatory process.
The ability to treat RA preclinically, and possibly with a less intensive and shorter regimen than is needed for overt polyarthritis [involvement of five or more joints], is an appealing prospect.
