Diet and Arthritis – Food Facts and Fallacies
Lose weight and eat healthy to feel better – but don’t expect your diet to "cure" your arthritis, says the Arthritis Research Campaign's 2003 awareness program: Diet and Arthritis - Food Facts and Fallacies. The UK charity is warning people against unrealistic expectations they might have about diet and arthritis.

Researchers Find Blacks Also Have Telltale Osteoarthritis Protein
Medical scientists have known for the past decade that levels of an important protein known as COMP were higher in cartilage, ligaments, tendons and joint lubricating fluid of whites with osteoarthritis than in those without the painful, degenerative illness. Now, researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have shown for the first time that the same condition is true in blacks.

Study Finds Hidden Costs with Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs
Nonselective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used to treat the pain associated with arthritis, are well known to increase the risk for certain side effects such as stomach upset, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. Now, new research published in the April, 2003 issue of The Journal of Rheumatology examined the excess risk and costs associated with the major adverse effects of prescription NSAIDs, and found the excess cost is modest in low risk patients, but much higher in patients with specific risk factors.

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: Methionine
--------------------------------
Studies have shown the protective effects of Methionine in animal models against mercury, lead and atrazine (an herbicide). Methionine is an essential sulfur amino acid and is listed on the FDA’s “generally regarded as safe” list. It was once used in soy-based baby formulas to provide adequate Methionine nutrition for infants.
Methionine is a critical component of tissue development, growth and tissue repair for all humans – no matter what the age. Methionine functions as an antioxidant (free radical deactivator) and helps neutralize toxins. It serves as a principal source of sulfur that the body needs to replenish daily. Sulfur is used for mucous production and detoxification. To learn more about the benefits of methionine, click on the link below.
