UCLA Researchers Study Cost of Popular Arthritis Drugs

A new study demonstrates that a popular class of arthritis drugs is not as cost-effective as common painkillers in treating chronic arthritis in an average patient. The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System study found that cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitor drugs (Coxibs) such as rofecoxib (Vioxx) and celecoxib (Celebrex) are not as cost-effective as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen, in treating an average chronic arthritis patient. The study may lead to increased use of the less expensive NSAIDs to treat arthritis.

Camera Pill Reveals Damage From Anti-inflammatory Drugs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may damage more of the intestine than previously thought, according to images taken by a swallowable, capsule-size camera pill used in a Baylor College of Medicine study. According to the study, announced at the Digestive Disease Week 2003 conference in Orlando, Fla., capsule endoscopy detected NSAID related injury in the small bowel, an area of the gastrointestinal tract unreachable by other diagnostic tools such as endoscopes. The tool detected small bowel erosions in 62 percent of NSAID users compared to 5 percent of non-NSAID users.

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: Yeast & Fungi
---------------------------------

Like weeds in a lawn, pathogenic fungi and yeasts (single-celled fungi) can invade and overtake our bodies. In people with healthy immune systems, cells called macrophages and neutrophils engulf these pathogens, nipping them in the bud. But when the immune system is weakened by disease or drugs, fungi – much like weeds in your garden, can grow unchecked.

Researchers at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research take a broad-based approach to the study of pathogenic yeasts and fungi, combining new genomic approaches and genetic techniques to boost scientists' knowledge of how fungal pathogens infect human, animal and plant hosts.

One key area of this research focuses on the mechanisms that enable yeasts such as Candida albicans to switch between two different forms. Like other yeasts, they multiply through cell division, or grow as filaments. "This ability to exist in two different forms give fungi a real advantage and flexibility to deal with immune systems," says researcher Robert T. Wheeler.
