Garden of Delights: Making a Favorite Pastime Easy on Your Joints

Gardening is an enjoyable and fulfilling pastime for many arthritis patients, but building and maintaining your garden may be difficult if your joints hurt. Whether it is your knees, back or fingers, moving about without general pain or stiffness while you work is difficult. The following article will outline some basic tips and plans that you can do to help minimize the strain on your body for a fulfilling gardening experience.

Pain Research: An Overview

Throbbing, burning, aching, stinging–the terms patients use to describe pain are often different because pain is personal and subjective and influenced by age, gender, race/ethnicity, and psychosocial factors. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as an unpleasant experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage to a person's body. Pain research is conducted and funded by the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health (NIH) by many of its institutes and centers, including the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS). Although some of this research on pain is not linked to any disease specifically, certain aspects of pain research are applicable to many diseases.

Enbrel Combo Therapy Inhibits Joint Damage in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Results of a new study assessing the efficacy of combination treatment with Enbrel (etanercept) and methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, showed 80% of patients experienced no disease progression over one year, compared with Enbrel or methotrexate alone.

Research Spotlight: Polyphenols

-------------------------------

A diet rich in a class of bioflavonoids, the polyphenols, may reduce the risk of chronic disease by reducing oxidative stress, according to researchers at the Sookmyung Women's University who published a study in the June issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (22, 3:217-23, 2003). Based on epidemiological evidence showing dietary polyphenols reduce the risk of chronic disease, researchers compared the effects of polyphenol-rich and -depleted diets in 19 healthy, non-smoking women.

The two dietary interventions -- polyphenol-rich and -depleted -- lasted six days each, separated by a three-day washout period. Blood and urine samples were collected at baseline, day three and day six, and researchers analyzed them for oxidative stress markers, including plasma antioxidant vitamins, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and lymphocyte DNA damage.

The researchers concluded that "diets rich in polyphenols may decrease the risk of chronic disease by reducing oxidative stress." To read more about this research, click on the link below:
